Caledon is a very polite community, being based on 19th Century (Victorian) times but with a twist: it adds steampunk technology (which would be appropriate for the time), and adds in all the technologies of the sci-fi novels from and about that era. For example, Tesla technology is fully operational and accepted in Caledon, as is Jules Verne's time machine, Nautilus (the tech if not the boat herself), and moon rocket.
It has grown to over twenty sims, and in addition to being all-around themed in Victorian dress, furniture and technology, each sim has its own sub-theme. There is Caledon Moors, for the darker ghost & vampire side of things. Caledon Cay is 19th Century New Orleans style. Caledon VictoriaCity is a shining city from "the age of men" with libraries and shops and more. Caledon Tanglewood is an Alice-in-Wonderland style forest of tinies, and Caledon Lionsgate is a living tribute to The Island of Dr. Moreau.
And so many more. It is truly an impressive place to visit or live. The community operates in more or less a royalty chain, with Dukes and Dutchesses, Barons and three military branches. Elegant events and a full social calendar is a hallmark of Caledon, where gentlemen escort debutantes after they are formally introduced, of course. Caledon has no king, however, but only a benevolent "Guvnah", Desmond Shang. I've had the honor or meeting Mr. Shang, and he is every bit the gentleman and leader you'd expect from someone running over twenty sims, quite successfully.
Rarely does Caledon see the internal drama that is common to many communities. In fact, life in Caledon is so peaceful that they have to invent their own wars! They also have their own murder mysteries, kidnapping (like hide and seek but with a prominent citizen being the hidden), story telling nights, and more.
Formal manners are the norm in Caledon. People will call you Mr. or Miss, using your last name only, until you invite them to call you by your first name or by a nickname. Victorian phrases are commonly used. Politeness and wide consideration for others are the mode of the day. Of course, big hoop-skirt dresses and 3-piece suits are the dress code - never required but you'll see them everywhere. If you teleport into Caledon VictoriaCity, you'll find carts of free stuff in the central park (the hub), including free dresses and suits, so anyone can enjoy Caledon "in the moccasins," as it were.
Even as everyone is welcome to visit, explore and be in Caledon - just as you are, no special dress required, no matter where you are from! - it remains a relatively safe and quiet region because griefers are handled quickly and efficiently. The "staff" quickly bans anyone shooting, harrassing, etc. Aye, ye may speak yer salty tongue all you like, if that's who you are, but keep yer actions friendly in Caledon.
Some of the most talented clothes makers and builders in SL are citizens in the Caledon community. They are so advanced and artistic that if you are seeking to get started building your own art, you may feel intimidated. Keep at it, though, as they were beginners once themselves, and if you ever had a shot at "apprenticing" and learning tricks from folks, the delightful and gentle folk of Caledon are certainly a good choice.
Caledon is a great place to tour or to bring friends and explore - SL or RL friends! A train and steam-car transit system runs throughout the city areas, and amazing builds are everywhere. Enjoy the amazing details and concepts that are the hallmark of Caledon builders.

I know more about Caledon than I know about most sims because I have made it my home for more than a year now. Caledon was the sim that kept me in SL - I was literally an hour from giving up on SL when I found Caledon. I knew in a heartbeat that this was the place I wanted to live in SL. Several key citizens were very welcoming and helped me along with projects that ended up being prominent landmarks, and for that I will be forever grateful.
