The Library system in SL is extensive and growing. The people behind the library system are some of the coolest people in SL - they are polite, understanding, and helpful. They also know tons about the world and how to find places, people information and things in it.
One of the best things that happened to me my first week in world was a party at Info Island. Dancing, places to sit, and friendly people to talk to. Sure, I was a little intimidated because I didn't know how to dance, and many avatars had cool clothes and cool accessories, like dancing glow sticks. So I just sat (I figured out how to sit), and chatted. I didn't even know about IM's, so everything I said was on the public channel.
I acted like I was at a party in RL - I was polite, respectful of the area and people, and folks were really nice. I asked questions and they answered. They gave me a virutal beer to drink while kicking back at my table. I gave my table-friend a cigar. I made new friends. It was a landmark evening for me, a new-newbie, in SL.
Plus, on the Library islands, there are several different library buildings to explore. You can learn a lot, figure out plenty of SL devices, like how to play audio and video, how to read a book, and more - and, you can get free cool stuff (like a free InfoHUD!)
If you want some quality SL exploration time, visit the Libraries:
This is the telehub. There is often a reference librarian there to greet you (certain hours). You'll find an events calendar and a teleportation station right there at the hub. Every destination on the station is worth a visit.
The Library system in SL is also one of the richest real-world applications of SL - in other words, you can do useful, real-world research and learning in the SL Libraries that (in some cases) you can't do easily in the real world. And, the arms of real-life education in SL are all around the Library system. It's one of the hottest areas of growth and projects in SL.
You can find out about events and news about the Library system in SL right on the web as well, at http://www.infoisland.org/.
